The Coolidge Effect: Why Novelty Reignites Our Desire

A president, a hen, and a joke that ended up in the scientific literature. What renewed desire really runs on.

Put a male rat in a box with a willing female and, sooner or later, he stops. Spent, done, uninterested. Then you slide a new female into the box and something switches back on. He is alert again, ready again, as if the last hour never happened. Biologists have a name for that flip, and it comes from an unlikely place: a joke about a president. It is called the Coolidge effect, and once you see it, you start noticing it everywhere.

A joke that earned a place in science

The term traces back to Frank A. Beach, the American psychologist widely regarded as the founder of behavioural endocrinology. By his own account, in a letter he wrote in 1974, Beach introduced the phrase in the late 1950s. He was not naming it after a research subject. He was naming it after an old gag that had been doing the rounds.

The story goes like this. President Calvin Coolidge and his wife Grace are touring a government farm, shown around in separate groups. Mrs Coolidge passes the chicken yard and notices a rooster going at it with real enthusiasm. She asks how often the bird manages that. Dozens of times a day, comes the answer. Tell that to the President when he comes by, she says. When the President reaches the yard and hears the number, he asks just one question: same hen every time? No sir, a different hen each time. The President nods. Tell that to Mrs Coolidge.

Charming, and almost certainly untrue. Historians find no contemporary record of any such visit, and the tale only surfaced in print decades after Coolidge left office. Treat it as apocryphal. The science it labels, though, is solid.

What the rats revealed

Beach did not pull the phrase from nowhere. Working with Lisbeth Jordan in the mid 1950s, he studied sexual exhaustion and recovery in male rats. A few years later, Wilson, Kuehn and Beach published the classic 1963 demonstration: a male mates with a female until he simply stops responding, apparently finished for the night. Swap in a novel female and he revives, mounting again with something close to his original vigour.

The mechanism has a name too. Psychologists call it habituation, and its rebound, dishabituation. Repeat the same stimulus and the response fades. Change the stimulus and the response comes roaring back. It was never that the animal ran out of fuel. It ran out of interest in that one particular signal.

It was never a fuel problem. It was an interest problem.

This is not a quirk of one lab or one species. The pattern has been recorded in hamsters, sheep, cattle and fowl, and it sits close to the brain's reward machinery: novelty nudges the same circuits that drive pursuit and wanting.

Does it happen in people?

Carefully, yes, at least in part. The most cited human work comes from Eric Koukounas and Ray Over, who across the 1990s showed men the same explicit film clip over and over. Arousal, measured directly, dropped clip by clip. Then they introduced a fresh clip and arousal climbed back up. Same appetite, new signal, restored response.

People are not rats, and desire in a person is tangled up with attention, meaning, memory and love in ways no rodent has to manage. So the honest reading stays narrow: familiar, repeated stimuli tend to lose their charge, and novelty tends to bring it back. That is not a life sentence. It is a lever.

Novelty you can build on purpose

Here is the useful turn. If sameness dulls and novelty revives, you do not have to go looking for a new partner to feel that spark. The variable that actually moved in the lab was the signal, not the person. Vary the signal and you can borrow some of the same lift.

This is where a slow, deliberate practice earns its keep. Change the pace. Stop just short of the peak, let the sensation settle, then start again from somewhere new. Draw the whole thing out instead of running the same short loop to its usual finish. Each reset is, in a small way, a fresh stimulus, and the body answers a fresh stimulus. It is one of the quieter benefits of edging, and it is the whole logic behind what edging actually is: keep arousal alive by refusing to let it go stale.

Same appetite, new signal. That is the whole trick.

The rooster in the joke needed a different hen. You just need a different approach. Turn the Coolidge effect around and it works for you instead of against you.
