The chemistry of the comedown
Orgasm is a dopamine event. Dopamine is the molecule of wanting, of chase and anticipation, and through arousal it climbs. Then you finish, and it falls. Almost at the same instant a second hormone steps forward: prolactin, released by the pituitary gland in a sharp surge that can stay elevated for more than an hour. In the early studies that measured this, prolactin rose after orgasm and did not rise after arousal alone. The finish was the trigger, not the excitement.
Prolactin acts as a brake on dopamine. Where dopamine says go, prolactin says enough. In 2021, researchers testing this directly in mice could not make the refractory period behave the way the theory predicted: raising prolactin to mimic the natural release did nothing to sexual activity, and blocking prolactin failed to shorten the recovery the way a real brake should.
